The Back Story

Mid-autumn festivals are especially tense times for Yu Hang, for he would join the dragon boat race every year, and his team would make haste to practice as the race draws near.

Before the mid-autumn festival in 2013, Yu Hang gave himself a new challenge to document scenes of himself and his teammates at the race through clay. However, time was short, and as Yu Hang grew desperate, he rushed through the estimations. The dragon boat broke during the firing. A disappointment it sure was, but so was it a precious lesson for Yu Hang.

The dragon boat was constantly on his mind. Came the second year of the mid-autumn festival, Yu Hang brought up the challenge again but two months earlier this time. This time, he made elaborate plans, and, building upon the experience last time, attained a firmer grasp of the dampness (need to verify term?) of the clay boat and the thickness of the slabs. In anxious anticipation, he waited during the firing. At last, the work was a success, completed in time for the festival. He named it - Paddling the Dragon Boat.

The work was subsequently exhibited at the 2015 Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale. It was Yu Hang's first set of artwork to be exhibited overseas.

Then came 2017, when Yu Hang learned that his work was to be exhibited at the Echigo-tsumari Art Field exhibition. At once, he added sea waves to the dragon boat work; Taking reference from the different shapes and forms of waves, he created different kinds of waves and injected this new element to his work. In 2018, the work was displayed at the Echigo Tsumari Cultural Hall, Tokamachi, Japan, during which Yu Hang's family made the trip over to visit the work and support him.

"Paddling the Dragon Boat" was exhibited at the followings,

The work My Father Is a Chef is Yu Hang's record of the scene of his chef father cooking for the family's reunion dinner. At the mention of the work during an interview with Yu Hang's father, it was revealed that Yu Hang does not talk to his father often, but in his mind, his father was an incredible figure, capable of creating many elaborate, masterful dishes all by himself to craft an extraordinary dinner. Everything that his father did Yu Hang remembered by heart, and with clay and words, he re-enacted the reunion dinner, all the while smiling in blissful recollection. When his father learned of the work to be exhibited, he brought a camera over to photograph it.

Art transcends barriers. The father and the son saw each other with renewed appreciation, and as they looked at each other, nothing was left unsaid.

They were proud of each other from the bottom of their hearts - we are both Masters Siu.
